Plan your Trip

Arriving at the Central Library: Get off the train, metro, or tram at stop Rotterdam Blaak. Tram lines 21 and 24 and metro lines A, B, C pass by Blaak and by Rotterdam Central. The library is 22 minutes on foot and 7 minutes by bike from Rotterdam Central.

Central Library area: The Central Library is located very centrally in the city so many major attractions are also reachable by foot (Markthal, Cubic Houses, Old Harbor, Maritime Museum, Great or St. Lawrence Church, and more). Check the tourist information website for an overview of sights in the city https://en.rotterdam.info/visitors-info/rotterdam-tourist-information/ and/ or for interesting events https://en.rotterdam.info/events/

Main modes of transportation in the city: Metro, tram, biking and even transport by water is possible. Rotterdam Blaak is the stop next to the central library and has both a tram and a metro stop as well as a train station. For more information about transport in Rotterdam see here https://en.rotterdam.info/visitors-info/in-rotterdam/

Good to know: You can also check in and out of the tram and/or metro using your regular debit card if you don’t want to buy an OV chip card.

National and international connections: Rotterdam is reasonably near to several cities in the Netherlands; The Hague, Delft, Schiedam, Gouda and Dordrecht can all be reached by train within half an hour from Rotterdam central station located in the city center (walkable distance from the Central Library). Rotterdam Centraal is served by metro, bus and tram lines, as well as by Randstad Rail (metro between Rotterdam and The Hague). Rotterdam Centraal also connects Rotterdam with Brussels, Paris, London etc. Intercity direct connects Rotterdam Centraal to Schiphol Airport (26 minutes) and the Brussels International airport (1h40).Note that the cost of train tickets can vary depending on the time of day, route and class you book. Check the NS International website form more information for international destinations https://www.nsinternational.com/en/traintickets-v3/#/search

Tips to get around: Consider a blue (non-personalized) OV chip card for 7.50 euros that you can top up at main train/tram/metro stations and some Albert Heijn locations. You can buy it at major train stations (e.g., Rotterdam Centraal or Blaak). You then check in and out either on the tram itself or at the metro stop. With that card you can also rent an OV bike at Blaak or Central Station for 4.45 euros per day. There are also other bike sharing options in the city such as Donkey Republic (orange bikes) and GO Sharing (green bikes and scooters). Check the prices of the public transport card on the RET website https://www.ret.nl/en/home/travel-products/products-and-fares/
